Onyx does this: Parameter > Login > Startup Sound "Disable". Done.
You do not need a dedicated 2$ app for this task.

For those of you that do not know the purpose of the startup sound, it's the result of a startup diagnostic. There are several different sounds that the Mac will play at startup depending upon its status: bad RAM, bad ROM, etc. If you mute the sound it will not be able to convey status information when something is ailing, and that's the time you will want to hear it, or the Apple repair tech will. A good compromise is to plug a headphone plug into its headphone jack. It doesn't even need to have a wire or headphone on it, just the plug itself will mute the sound.
